  • WHAT IS NFL PLAYERS INC.’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE NFLPA?

    NFL Players Inc. (NFLPI) is the licensing and marketing subsidiary of the NFLPA.  A portion of the revenue generated by NFLPI funds the operation of the NFLPA.

    At various team visits throughout the year, the NFLPA player advocates educate players about group licensing before players sign the Group Licensing Assignment (GLA).  The group licensing rights provided by the players through the GLAs are assigned to NFLPI so it can sell those rights in the sports marketplace.  Each year the NFLPA Board of Player Representatives receives an annual report from NFLPI covering activities and financial information, including an independent audit.

  • WHAT DOES NFL PLAYERS INC. MEAN TO THE PLAYERS?  

    NFL Players Inc. exists to benefit the players. NFLPI provides positive exposure for all players in the sports marketplace, an equal share of licensing revenues to all participating players, additional paid player marketing opportunities to many players, and financial support for the NFLPA. It does not inhibit the player’s ability to market himself individually.

  • WHAT IS THE GLA?  

    When a player signs an NFLPA Group Licensing Assignment (GLA) or assigns his group licensing rights to the NFLPA through Paragraph 4(b) of his NFL Player Contract, he gives the NFLPA the exclusive right to use his name, number, likeness, voice, facsimile signature, photograph, picture and/or biographical information (collectively “image”) in licensed programs involving six or more players.  The NFLPA has assigned, and will continue to assign, those rights to NFL Players Inc. (NFLPI).  (Copies of the GLA and Paragraph 4(b) of the NFL Player Contract are included in this packet.) 

    It is not the intent of NFLPI to interfere with or compete with a player’s individual marketing opportunities.  Players who sign the GLA have the opportunity to exclude themselves from a particular program if they notify the NFLPA or NFLPI that they have an existing individual exclusive deal with a competing company for a program that includes five or fewer players. 

  • WHAT IS GROUP LICENSING?  

    Group licensing programs are defined as those programs in which a licensee utilizes a total of six (6) or more NFL player images in conjunction with or on products that are sold at retail or used as promotional or premium items.  The player’s “image” may be depicted individually on a product as a part of a series or collectively with other players.

    Some NFL Players Inc. group licensing programs utilize as few as 12 players and others as many as 1,800 league-wide.  Some examples of the more than 60 NFLPI licensed products are: Trading cards (125-500 players), Video and mobile games (1,500+ players), Apparel (50-1,000 players), and Collectibles (12-75 players).
