NFLPA ALERT – UPDATE CONCERNING POLIQUIN’S YANG R-ALA

On March 22, 2013, the NFLPA issued an Alert stating it had received information from a certified laboratory whose testing revealed that a batch of Poliquin’s YANG R-ALA product was contaminated with the stimulant MDMA, also known as “X,” “Ecstasy,” and “Molly.” This Alert provides additional information and supersedes the March 22, 2013 Alert.

Earlier this year, an NFL player who tested positive for MDMA under the NFL/NFLPA Substances of Abuse Policy asked for the NFLPA’s assistance in determining the source of the MDMA in his system. The player came forward with an open bottle of Poliquin’s YANG R-ALA and the NFLPA arranged for testing of that bottle by a certified laboratory, the results of which indicated that the tested samples contained MDMA. The NFLPA did not ask the laboratory to test any unopened or additional bottles of YANG R-ALA or contact Poliquin.

After the NFLPA issued the March 22, 2013 Alert, Poliquin contacted the NFLPA and stated that Poliquin had commissioned two independent laboratories to test unopened containers from the same production run of YANG R-ALA for the presence of banned substances and that the test results did not reveal MDMA or any other contaminant. Further, Poliquin provided the NFLPA with laboratory test results, assured the NFLPA that the YANG R-ALA labeling is accurate, and asked the NFLPA to share this information with its members, which the NFLPA is doing with this Alert.
