There was a time when Jeff Van Note admittedly took little interest in the NFLPA’s efforts, even going as far to cross the picket line during the 1974 players strike. But after seeing Atlanta Falcons teammate and Player Representative Ken Reaves traded that same year, Van Note realized the need to take up the fight for his fellow players.

In 1982, after becoming the first vice president of the NFLPA, Van Note joined with teammate Mike Kenn to make the Falcons one of the strongest union teams in the league. Van Note went on to become the union’s President from 1983-1984, working closely with Executive Director Gene Upshaw to solidify the organization in its push for free agency and a fair revenue share for players.

Van Note’s 18-year career with Atlanta, ending with his retirement in 1986, stands as one of the longest tenures in league history. The center’s durable play is mirrored by his resonating voice among players, as he’s served on the Retirement Board and continues to educate others about the beneficiary work carried out by the NFLPA.
